The People of Coworking include these individuals and organizations who publicly commit to our vision.
POC strives to improve the diversity of the visible people in our industry: those on stage, whether in person at a conference or digitally on a webinar. Because the typical stage is so predominantly or even solely white, improvement can most visibly be made through ethnicity vis a vis with skin color. Diversity is critical to ideally include gender and disability, amongst other traits, but for now People of Coworking will keep our initial goals simple. As such, the pledge is similarly simple and brief.
POC does not dictate any formulas to achieve 'diversity,' mostly because, frankly, the bar is so low: even 1 out of 3, 4, or 5 panelists would affect great improvement. POC has made recommendations such as, when you are invited to be a solo speaker, you verify that there will be diversity across several solo speakers. A conference in one city may achieve meaningful diversity at, say, 40% non-white, but in another city, at 20%. As conditions improve, POC will evolve our guidelines.
